About the AISSR
The Faculty of Social and Behavioural Sciences (FMG) is the largest educational and research institution in the social sciences in the Netherlands. The Faculty serves 9,000 students in numerous Bachelor's and Master's programmes in Political Science, Sociology, Anthropology, Communication Science, Psychology, Social Geography, Planning and International Development Studies, and Educational Sciences. The academic staff is employed in education as well as research. There are over 1,200 employees at the Faculty, which resides in a number of buildings in the centre of Amsterdam.
The Department of Political Sciences is one of the departments of the FMG. Education and research activities are carried out by special institutes. The College of Social Sciences (GSS) and the Graduate School of Social Sciences (GSSS) are responsible for the undergraduate and graduate teaching programmes in Political Science. The research within the Department is conducted in the research programmes of the Amsterdam Institute for Social Science Research (AISSR).
The Department of Political Science at the University of Amsterdam invites applications for one tenure-track assistant professorship in International Relations. The position is open with respect to the subfield of International Relations, but should fit in and enrich the Research Programme Group ‘Political Economy and Transnational Governance’. With respect to teaching the ideal candidate would be able to offer courses in international relations and the politics of either development or security with a focus on Asia or Africa.
Assistant/Associate Professor in International Relations

Tasks
- Developing, conducting, and supervising high quality academic research in the field of International Relations;
- (Participation in) the acquisition of external research funding;
- A dynamic contribution to the Programme Group ‘Political Economy and Transnational Governance’ of the Amsterdam Institute for Social Science Research, and to the development of the field through scholarly publications and participation in national and international research networks and educational initiatives;
- Teaching general and specialist courses in International Relations, Political Science, or Conflict Resolution and Governance at both undergraduate and graduate levels, and involvement in post-graduate supervision.
Requirements
- A completed doctoral thesis in Political Science or another relevant field in the social sciences;
- An ongoing programme of research and publications, focused on international ‘peer reviewed’ journals and/or books published by internationally recognised academic presses;
- Broad general knowledge in International Relations;
- Mastery of appropriate social science research methods (qualitative and/or quantitative);
- Ability to provide excellent and inspiring teaching at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels, in English; ability to teach also in Dutch is a plus;
- Ability and willingness to acquire excellent passive and adequate active knowledge of Dutch within a period of two years;
- Ownership of the Dutch basic qualification in higher education (Basiskwalificatie Onderwijs; BKO) certificate, or a willingness to acquire it within reasonable time.
Appointment
According to our employment policies, you will be offered a temporary contract for three years, with conditions for tenure thereafter agreed upon appointment. The gross yearly salary (including holiday pay and an extra monthly payment) will be between €44.589 and €69.361, based on a full-time appointment and depending on the candidate’s qualifications and experience.
