Wat kan beleidsbemiddeling betekenen voor Nederlandse bestuurders?
Beleidsbemiddeling is een nieuwe vorm van conflicthantering in publieke kwesties. Bij beleidsbemiddeling schakelen maatschappelijke partijen een onafhankelijke derde in om te bemiddelen. Op donderdag 5 april wordt het rapport Publieke beleidsbemiddeling aangeboden aan de Nationale ombudsman, dr. Alex Brenninkmeijer.

Renewed funding IS Academie Education and International Development
After a successful first phase (2006-2011) of the IS Academie cooperation between the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs (DSO-OO) and the research group on Education and Development (part of the AISSR Governance and Inclusive Development Group), a new agreement has been signed for continued funding for a period of 3 years.

US subprime mortgages mainly issued to middle class households
Most subprime mortgages in the US were issued to members of the middle classes. The current perception that most subprime mortgages in the US were sold to lower-income groups is thus inaccurate. This is one of the conclusions of a recently published book entitled ‘Subprime Cities: The Political Economy of Mortgage Markets’, compiled under the editorial supervision of Manuel Aalbers, assistant professor in Social Geography and Planning at the University of Amsterdam (UvA).

New research: "Can’t we leave that to the volunteers?' Changing relationships between professionals and volunteers in care and welfare.
NWO has awarded Jan Willem Duyvendak, Evelien Tonkens, Loes Verplanke and Imrat Verhoeven this project that analyzes the shift from professionals to volunteers in social services in The Netherlands.The project runs for two years and will start around the summer of 2012.

Prestigious travel grant for Mario Rutten
Prof. Mario Rutten has secured an International Collaboration Award (ICA) of $13250 by the Australian Research Council (ARC) within the research project Contingent Development: The Regional Impacts of Neoliberal Globalization in India. ICA applications only have 10% success rate.

Maritime Studies (MAST) is an international journal devoted to maritime issues. The journal has received a generous subsidy from the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO) to become an Open Access Journal.

Cultural anthropologist John Kleinen and three of his students have received grants to study the use of images as scientific source. The results of the study will be translated in video tutorials for anthropologists, sociologists, political scientists and social geographers.

Nederlandse kiezer niet wispelturig maar kieskeurig
De Nederlandse kiezer verandert steeds vaker van partij. Meer dan de helft van de Nederlanders (55%) verandert wel eens van partijvoorkeur. Maar dat betekent niet dat de kiezer wispelturig, emotioneel of irrationeel is, zoals veel (oud-)politici beweren. Nederlanders zijn trouw aan hun eigen opvattingen, maar niet langer trouw aan een enkele partij: ze veranderen vooral tussen partijen die ideologisch sterk op elkaar lijken. Dit blijkt uit het onderzoek Kieskeurige kiezers van politicologen dr. Tom van der Meer en prof. dr. Wouter van der Brug van de Universiteit van Amsterdam.

ERC Advanced Grant: Globalization, Sports and the Precarity of Masculinity
Prof. Niko Besnier has received an ERC Advanced Grant for his multi-sited comparative ethnographic project that will investigate the migratory dynamics at play between selected developing countries and selected countries in the industrial world in three different sports, soccer-football, rugby union, and cricket.

Research Priority Area 'Global Health' launches new website and centre name
The Centre for Global Health and Inequality (CGHI) has changed its name to Centre for Social Science and Global Health (SSGH). SSGH builds on a long tradition of multidisciplinary social science research on health and illness at the same university.The website provides information on the activities of the centre and affiliated reseachers and projects.

Artists’s impressions of the boundaries of gender
The Amsterdam Research Centre for Gender and Sexuality (ARC-GS) has started a unique cooperation with Ronit Eden Concept and Spatial Design. Ronit Eden is currently organising the exhibition 'The Gatewatcher' (Spring 2012 in Arti et Amicitiae, Amsterdam, The Netherlands) where international artists address the boundaries of gender. ARC-GS has published photo's of their artworks on the ARC-GS website and thereby supports this exhibition.

What influence do such - often lifelong - relationships have on political processes in those home countries? In Memoriam Ineke van Wetering (1934-2011)
Op 18 oktober jl. is Ineke van Wetering overleden. Zij was antropologe aan de Vrije Universiteit en is gedurende één jaar (1995-1996) gasthoogleraar aan de ASSR geweest. Wij verliezen in haar een gedreven collega met een scherp etnografisch en analytisch oog.

Emancipatie en integratie: ruim vijftig wetenschappers presenteren laatste inzichten
Emancipatie beoogt bevrijding en gelijkwaardigheid, maar leidt in de praktijk niet zelden tot sociale uitsluiting, onbedoelde discriminatie en achterstelling. Vanuit die vaststelling discussiëren wetenschappers uit verschillende disciplines met elkaar op 14 en 15 oktober tijdens het congres ‘Uitsluitend Emancipatie’.
