By now, most scientists and laypeople are convinced that the world is facing a planetary crisis. Yet such existing social norms are often misperceived—a phenomenon known as pluralistic ignorance. In this talk, Sandra Geiger will provide an overview of what we know so far about pluralistic ignorance in the environmental domain: (1) its nature, (2) consequences, and (3) potential measures to counter such belief traps.

Motivate behavior change for sustainability

During the talk, the focus will be on existing research into a conceptual framework that aims to help diversify pluralistic ignorance research and more critically think about target audiences, target outcomes, and interventions to ultimately motivate behavior change for sustainability. Geigner concludes with possible avenues for future research and how insights about pluralistic ignorance can inform measures to help address the planetary crisis.
